Personality;
First and foremost, Ash is a prime example of "don't judge a book by its cover". This man, in Dean Winchester's words, is "a Lynyrd Skynyrd roadie". He takes naps on pool tables and has a glorious mullet, but Ash is a legitimate computer genius. He attended MIT and can write complex computer programs--even ones specific enough to track demons, and he can do it quickly. Within 51 hours, he managed to compose a program to track the demon Azazel anywhere in the world. He has an incredibly quick mind, and it's implied that he absorbs and understands new information very quickly. In Heaven, he became fluent in Enochian and gathered quite a bit of information simply by listening to them babble over a "holy roman police scanner" he rigged together himself. He even had the skills to hop between other peoples' heavens, unlike most people who can't leave their own heaven.

He's well aware of how smart he is, too. He isn't modest about it, but he doesn't brag either. His intelligence is just something that is. He's confident in his abilities and he knows how far they extend. He knows he's awesome. That's why he calls himself Dr. Badass. He can be a bit lazy, but when presented with anything that challenges his mind, he'll accept it with confidence and get right to work.

Ash is one of the chillest people you will ever meet. He's incredibly laid-back and easy-going, just fine with letting insults to his glorious mullet roll right off his shoulders. He's even completely cool with the fact that Sam and Dean essentially got him killed. Seriously--he's cool with it. It's implied that he wasn't always this way, having been kicked out of MIT "for fighting", but now, very little can knock him down. Possibly the only time we see Ash visibly shaken in canon is when Sam and Dean reveal that Jo and Ellen are dead, which brings me to my next point.

Jo and Ellen Harvelle are very important people in Ash's life. Although little is revealed about Ash's family, early life, or how he came to work at the Roadhouse, it's very clear that he cares deeply about the Harvelles. According to Jo's hunting journal, Ash (or "Miles", as early scripts call him) came to work in the Roadhouse in 2001, five years prior to his first appearance on the show. Ellen liked him because he essentially never left the bar, and he was happy to teach Jo about "picking out picking out patterns and seeing hidden clues in data". From the sound of her other journal entries, he even let her use his computer, which he's shown to be protective of in "Everybody Loves a Clown" (2x02) when Dean tries to touch it. He was given his own room, and he hasn't left since. He really hasn't left since. When he died, his personal heaven even took the form of the Roadhouse, implying that he considered the Roadhouse to be his home and Jo and Ellen to be his family. When Sam and Dean show up in his heaven and reveal that Jo and Ellen are dead, Ash appears visibly upset, has to calm himself down, and asks for confirmation that they at least went out fighting.

Now, that isn't to say that Ash isn't just a little ridiculous and over-the-top. If his hairstyle weren't a clear enough indication, he's a little wild. In the style of Lucy van Pelt, he keeps a sign on the door to his room that reads "Dr. Badass is:" with an "In/Out" sign beneath it. When he saves the Winchesters from Zachariah in Heaven, he's wearing a luchador mask and cape.

In short, Ash is brilliant, chill, and ridiculous, but he does genuinely care. He's always been happy to dig up information to the Winchesters, even going so far as to search for their parents in Heaven. He's a good guy, even if he does look like a Skynyrd roadie.
